چکیده
Bioinspired Continuum Robots In article number 2201616, Ji Liu, Haijun Peng, Jianing Wu, and co-workers present a three-segment continuum robot constructed by class-3 tensegrity structure, inspired the mechanism of an elephant trunk for regulating local stiffness. It relies on stiffness tunable material to achieve robotic programmable characteristics. This study may provide foundation potential application robots interacting with unstructured environments.

Shape Change Through Programmable Stiffness
We present a composite material with embedded sensing and actuation that can perform permanent shape changes by temporarily varying its stiffness and applying an external moment. Varying stiffness is a complementary approach to actuator-chain based approaches that can be accomplished using a large variety of means ranging from heat, electric field or vacuum. A polycaprolactone (PCL) bar provide...

متن کاملProgrammable thermal emissivity structures based on bioinspired self-shape materials
Programmable thermal emissivity structures based on the bioinspired self-shape anisotropic materials were developed at macro-scale, and further studied theoretically at smaller scale. We study a novel concept, incorporating materials that are capable of transforming their shape via microstructural rearrangements under temperature stimuli, while avoiding the use of exotic shape memory materials ...
متن کاملAcoustic Switches: Harnessing Deformation to Switch On and Off the Propagation of Sound (Adv. Mater. 8/2016).
Isosurfaces of sound waves traveling through an architected material proposed by K. Bertoldi and co-workers on page 1631 are depicted. The material comprises a square array of elastomeric helices in background air and acts as an on/off acoustic switch. It is characterized by frequency ranges of strong wave attenuation (bandgaps) in the undeformed configuration. Upon deformation, the initial ban...
متن کاملBioinspired Robotics and Vision with Humanoid Robots
In this talk, I will describe recent results on exploring recent results from neurophysiology and developmental psychology for the design of humanoid robot technologies. The outcome of this research is twofold: (i) using biology as an inspiration for more flexible and sophisticated robotic technologies and (ii) contribute to the understanding of human cognition by developing biologically plausi...
